Hydrae
Multi-mission Drone Prototype
Hydrae prototype overview and system demonstration.
Hydrae is a multi-mission drone prototype built as a flexible and durable quadcopter platform. The project focuses on creating a drone that can be modified based on the user’s needs, such as camera-based monitoring, agricultural spraying, and small emergency-response applications.
Overview
Hydrae is a configurable quadcopter drone prototype designed to support multiple mission types. Instead of building a drone for one fixed purpose, the project focuses on creating a durable aerial platform that can be adapted with different accessories and payloads based on the user’s needs.
- Multi-mission quadcopter platform.
- Configurable for different field applications.
- Designed for durability and future expansion.
- Supports camera and payload-based use cases.
Why Hydrae?
Many drone platforms are designed around a single use case. Hydrae was developed to provide a more adaptable solution by using a relatively large and durable quadcopter frame that can carry different accessories for different missions.
- Can be modified according to the mission requirement.
- Provides a flexible base for surveillance, agriculture, and response scenarios.
- Larger frame size allows easier accessory mounting.
- Durable frame helps reduce damage during testing and hard landings.
Current Capabilities
At its current stage, Hydrae is ready for modification and payload integration. The platform can be equipped with a camera module for monitoring, a small spraying tank for agricultural use, or other lightweight attachments for future field applications.
- Camera module for tracking and monitoring.
- Small spraying tank for agricultural pesticide application.
- Potential emergency-response attachment for small-fire scenarios.
- Expandable platform for additional mission-specific accessories.
Development Process
The build and modification process took approximately four months. This period covered platform selection, frame preparation, electronics assembly, wiring, testing, and adjustments for future multi-purpose use.
- Selected and assembled the quadcopter frame.
- Prepared the internal electronics and wiring.
- Tested the frame, motors, and power connections.
- Prepared the platform for future payload integration.
Technical Description
Hydrae uses an F450 quadcopter frame with a strong 4-axis structure. The frame is built from glass fiber and polyamide nylon, which provides durability and better resistance during landings. The frame also includes integrated PCB connections for direct ESC soldering and mounting points for cameras or other accessories.
- Frame: F450 Quadcopter 4-axis frame.
- Width: 450 mm.
- Height: 55 mm.
- Weight: 295 g without electronics.
- Material: glass fiber and polyamide nylon.
- Motor mount holes: 16 / 19 mm.
- Integrated PCB connections for ESC soldering.
- Mounting points for camera and mission accessories.
Demo & Testing
Hydrae was demonstrated as a physical prototype with its control system and software interface. The testing setup helped validate the build quality, electronics layout, and the drone’s potential as a configurable aerial platform.
- Demonstrated with control transmitter and software interface.
- Validated prototype assembly and wiring layout.
- Prepared for future flight and payload testing.
- Supports future improvements in monitoring and mission control.
